Martin Luther King, Jr. events planned for January

Two events celebrating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have been scheduled on the Elon University campus in January. Both are free and open to the public.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program is scheduled for noon, Wednesday, Jan. 14 in Whitley Auditorium. The annual King commemorative address will be delivered by Nadine Haley, assistant professor of education at Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, Minn. An African American professor at a predominantly white university, Haley teaches courses in multicultural education, literacy in schools and introduction to urban education.

Haley will discuss her efforts to promote an inclusive campus life for all students at Metropolitan State. She holds bachelor’s degrees from Langston (Okla.) University and Columbia (Ill.) College, a master’s degree from the University of Tulsa and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The program will also feature the announcement of the winning entry in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Essay Contest, open to all middle school students in Alamance County.

“Words From The King,” scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20 in Whitley Auditorium, will provide unique insights into the thoughts of Martin Luther King on his journey toward freedom. The dramatic production, which was written, directed and produced by Ernie Wade, includes music from renowned gospel singers Carla Truesdale and Rodney Archie.
