Beck’s restoration work to appear in PBS special

A large portion of an upcoming PBS program will feature scenes filmed at the North Carolina State Capitol, which has been restored in recent years under the direction of Raymond Beck '75. Details...

The building, located in downtown Raleigh, will be featured in the upcoming PBS special titled “American Experience.” The program will air Jan. 12-13 in two 90-minute segments on UNC-TV in North Carolina. Viewers in other states should check their local PBS listings.

The program is centered around the theme of U.S. reconstruction. The Senate chamber doubles as the Georgia state Senate chamber, while the House chamber doubles for the U.S. Capitol. Additional scenes were filmed in the capitol building and on its grounds. A production crew from WGBH in Boston filmed the scenes in December 2002.

Beck, North Carolina’s state capitol historian, has led an enormous restoration project at the 163-year-old Capitol since 1977. The effort has included restoring walls to their original colors, repairing fixtures and furnishing and returning rooms to their original appearance from the mid-1800s.

Beck and his work were profiled in a feature article in the fall 2003 issue of The Magazine of Elon.
