Beginning on Monday, March 29, Young Commons will become a “field of ribbons,” one for each of the 14,273 lives lost in Iraq during the past year, including US and other coalition soldiers, Iraqi soldiers and Iraqi civilians.

This effort is meant to mark the one-year anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq and to invite our community to pause and reflect on the human costs of war. The ribbons are intended to serve as a memorial to all who have died in Iraq, March 2003-March 2004.

The events that led to this war are complex and elicit a great variety of responses. It is hoped the ribbons will stir deep reflection, dialogue and even debate, all of which are at the heart of university life and community.
