Campus debate on presidential issues set for Oct. 21

Members of the campus community will debate key issues in the upcoming presidential election, including the war on terror and national security, the economy and same-sex marriage, during an event at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21 in McKinnon Hall. Details...

Eleven students and two faculty members will argue the Democratic, Republican and Independent stance on these issues during the debate, which is free and open to the public.

Karen Holt, executive director of Project Pericles, will serve as moderator for the debate. The perspective of an international student on each issue will be argued by junior Laith Majali.

Each debate team will be asked to give their position statements on each issue. Members of the audience will then submit written questions to the panelists. There will be time for rebuttal and response from the other debate teams on each question.

Following the formal debate, there will be a reception in the Fireplace Lounge in Moseley Center with the panelists. The reception is open to everyone.

The debate issues were chosen during campus-wide voting held Sept. 7. More than 400 people cast ballots in the voting.
