The Greensboro Symphony will present “Mancini Magic” at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14 in McCrary Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus.
The symphony’s new Principal Pops Conductor Michael Berkowitz will pay a special tribute to Henry Mancini, one of the great composers of television and show music. Winner of 20 Grammy Awards and four Academy Awards, Mancini hired Berkowitz as a drummer at age 19 and persuaded him to move to Los Angeles, where he became one of the city’s busiest studio musicians, working with stars like Gloria Estefan, Linda Ronstadt and Ringo Starr. “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” became a top 40 hit and won Mancini an Oscar in 1961. Joining Berkowitz will be drummer Jack Gilfoy and trumpeter Cecil Welch, two Mancini regulars.
Tickets are available for $40 in the orchestra section, $25 in the balcony, and $5 for students and those with valid Elon identification. There are a limited number of seats for those with an Elon ID. Tickets may be purchased by calling the McCrary Theatre box office at (336) 278-5610. The box office is open from 12:30-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
