Tillery has dedicated much of her artistic life to the research, teaching and performance of the historic African-American oral tradition of spirituals, work songs and field hollers. The Cultural Heritage Choir is a Grammy-nominated, percussion driven vocal ensemble which has perpetuated Tillery’s mission to preserve Black American music from slave songs to soul, while exploring the music’s West African roots.
