Elliott Jeffries “Jeff” Lynch, a seventh-grade student at Turrentine Middle School in Burlington, was recognized during Elon’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address program Thursday, Jan. 13.

The contest, open to middle school students in Alamance County, asks students to write a 250-500 word essay describing their personal efforts to keep King’s dream of equality alive. Lynch participates in a variety of activities at school, where he serves as a peer mediator, plays on the football and basketball teams and recently won first place in the science contest. He is also a choir member at Jeffries Cross Baptist Church.

“I have tried to exemplify the ideals of Dr. King,” Lynch wrote in his essay. “I try to do my best and take advantage of the opportunities given to me.”

Lynch received a $100 cash prize, a plaque, an Elon shirt and tickets to an Elon basketball game.
