Ellis part of recognized program

Clyde Ellis, associate professor of history, recently participated in a project that is a finalist in the 7th annual Native American Music Awards (the NAMMYs).

“Kiowa Hymns” by Ralph Kotay is a 2-CD compilation of 66 hymns. Ellis wrote an introductory essay for “Kiowa Hymns,” which has been nominated in the Best Traditional Recording category.

The project came out of Kotay and Ellis’ previous work together on “The Jesus Road: Kiowas, Christianity, and Indian Hymns,” a book that was nominated for the Society for Humanistic Anthropology’s 2002 Victor Turner Prize in Ethnographic Writing. The book was also nominated for the Society for Ethnomusicology’s 2003 Alan P. Merriam Prize, and was named to Choice magazine’s list of the most significant university press titles published in 2001-2002.

NAMMY winners will be announced Feb. 10 in Hollywood, Fla.
