A sculpture to honor those who lost their lives in the September 11 terrorist attacks, made from steel beams from the World Trade Center, arrived on campus April 4 and will be on display for a year. Details...
The 9-11 Sculpture Project, headed by Greensboro artist Jim Gallucci, incorporates the beams in their current condition. The sculpture, which is approximately 35 feet tall, has been placed on the lawn just west of the Koury Center on campus, facing Williamson Ave.
Contributions of concept drawings and words of remembrance were accepted from artists and ordinary citizens. The first phase of the sculpture was unveiled on the one-year anniversary of the attacks. It was made from 16 tons of structural steel from the World Trade Center in New York, which fell during the terrorist attacks.
Gallucci’s wife, Kathy, is assistant professor of biology at Elon, and their son, Mario, is a 2004 Elon graduate.
