Phoenix14News Ranked Top College Newscast

Phoenix14News, Elon’s solely student produced newscast, earned first place honors among college newscasts at a Broadcast Education Association awards ceremony April 21 in Las Vegas.

“This is such an incredible honor. I cannot begin to say how excited I am, but more importantly, how proud I am of the team of people who made this dream a reality,” said News Director David Douglas.

Phoenix14News also brought home the top honor in the competition’s feature story category for its I-TEAM Investigation “Facebook Fear,” a story that exposed potential hidden dangers of thefacebook.com. The story was a team effort between the show’s Senior Correspondent and Chief I-TEAM Investigator Erin Flynn, and David Douglas, who produced the piece.

Flynn said she was most proud of the newscast recognition, which indicated an amazing team effort among the staff.

Linda Lashendock, who serves as advisor to the staff of Phoenix14News, and Douglas were in Las Vegas to accept both awards. The BEA Student News competition included 179 schools from across the country. The award-winning edition of Phoenix14News Tonight was anchored by Agnes Bannigan and Scott Myrick, and was produced by Jennifer Sposato. It aired live on the Elon campus on October 11, 2004.
