The Ernest T. Stewart Award for Alumni Volunteer Involvement is presented by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the largest international association of educational institutions. Chandler will receive the award for his exceptional overall service to Elon. The award is named in honor of the first executive director of the American Alumni Council, an organization that preceded CASE.
A 1949 Elon graduate, Chandler has served on the Board of Trustees for 37 years. He served as board chair from 1991 to 1994, encouraging fellow trustees to envision the future of Elon. His leadership was instrumental in the development of the Elon Vision strategic plan, which transformed Elon from a regional college into one of the premier undergraduate institutions on the Eastern Seaboard. He was also a driving force behind Elon’s effort to achieve university status in 2001.
He has served as chair of the board’s investment committee since its inception, helping Elon preserve and grow its endowment during challenging economic times. He has served on virtually every board committee during his term. In 1978, Elon recognized his commitment with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
After interrupting his studies to enlist in the U.S. Army, Chandler served in the European theatre during World War II. Following graduation, he joined Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, Inc., in Richmond, Va. He retired from Universal Corp., in 1992 as vice chairman. His record of community service includes work with the Boy Scouts of America, the Virginia Society for Crippled Children and Adults, The Virginia Home, the Metro Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Metropolitan Business Foundation.
