Death of an Elon student

Aug. 14, 2005

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

This afternoon we received word from the family of James Willard that James passed away Sunday morning soon after incurring injuries in a single vehicle traffic crash near his hometown of Ford, Virginia. He was a rising sophomore majoring in Journalism at Elon. His car overturned after running off the road to the left, and then crossing back across the road. He was alone at the time of the accident.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. this Thursday at the Western Heights Baptist Church at the following address: 24416 Cox Road, Petersburg, VA. 23803. Friends and family will gather at the church at 10 a.m. Cards and flowers may be sent to the church or to Willard’s home at 10014 Colemans Lake Road, Ford, VA 23850, in care of his parents, Jonathan and Debra Willard. Both of his parents are graduates of Elon. Anyone who wishes to caravan from Elon to the memorial is encouraged to contact my office at 278-7220 so that travel plans may be coordinated.

After students return to the Elon campus in a few days, there will be a “Gathering of Friends” for all who wish to share their feelings of loss and reflect on memories and good times with James. The campus will be notified of the time, date and location.

The loss of a classmate and friend is disconcerting. Those who knew James may wish to speak with their minister or speak with a counselor. Also, do not hesitate to contact the Chaplain’s Office at 278-7729, Counseling Services at 278-7280 or the Office of Student Development at 278-7200. I you have questions or if I can be of assistance, please email me at jacksons@elon.edu or call at 278-7220.
