Student-athletes named to Academic All-SoCon team

Elon placed 33 student-athletes on the 2005 TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference fall sports team, announced Jan. 10. Details...

The squad consists of student-athletes in the sports of men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball. To qualify for a spot on the squad, an athlete – of at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her institution – must have participated in at least 50 percent of his/her team’s contests this fall while forging a 3.20 or better cumulative grade-point average.

The 253 total student-athletes averaged a 3.57 grade-point average on a 4.00 scale, including 142 who earned a 3.50 or above. Wofford boasted the most individuals selected with 37 honorees, followed by Elon (33), Furman (29), Appalachian State (27), Western Carolina (25), Davidson (24), UNC Greensboro (20), College of Charleston (19), Chattanooga (18), Georgia Southern (14) and The Citadel (seven).

This is the fourth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. The All-Academic squads are made possible by a grant from the SoCon’s Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
