Folklore professor to discuss role of art in Islamic history, culture

Henry Glassie, professor of folklore at Indiana University and co-director of the Turkish Studies program, will discuss his 20 years of ethnographic field study in the cities and villages of modern Turkey during a presentation at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 9 in Yeager Recital Hall, located in the Center for the Arts on the Elon University campus. Glassie will use the art of everyday life in these places as a way to discuss Islamic history, culture and thought.

Glassie has published 13 books, including “Turkish Traditional Art Today,” for which he was honored with the Award for Superior Service by the Turkish Ministry of Culture. Glassie has received many fellowships and grants, including ones from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Glassie’s presentation is free and open to the public.
