Periclean Scholars team filming documentary in Honduras

Four Elon students and faculty members have arrived in Honduras to begin filming a documentary on hunger and malnutrition in the country. Seniors Stacy Lucius and Maria Interiano, members of the Periclean Scholars Class of 2007, arrived in Honduras Aug. 11 along with Jim Brown, associate professor of history, and Jay McMerty, senior video producer.

Funding for the documentary has been provided through a grant from the Park Foundation. The Periclean Scholars Class of 2007 is raising awareness about hunger in Honduras, where more than 1.6 million people suffered from malnutrition in 2004.

The Honduran Office of Health and Nutrition estimates that 75 percent of children under age 5 are malnourished. The Periclean Scholars have raised more than $6,500 to help build a dining facility in the pediatric ward of the Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital in San Pedro Sula.

The Elon team in Honduras is visiting the hospital and conducting interviews with doctors, nurses and parents at the hospital. They will return to campus next week and begin editing their footage for the final documentary.
