First students move into The Oaks

The first building of The Oaks residence complex opened Sunday, Aug. 27. The 96 students who are the first residents of Building A gave the new apartments rave reviews. Details...

Construction on Building A was completed just in time to allow students to move in. Workers were on hand Aug. 27 to iron out some minor problems, including Internet hook-ups and water connections. Finishing work on the building will continue, as temporary hallway carpets are replaced with permanent flooring and other construction detailing is completed.

Carol England, a sophomore psychology major, said her apartment is “spacious and new – which is always nice.” England, who previously lived in Jordan Center, which was demolished to make way for The Oaks, said this new housing is “a million times better.”

Sophomores Stephanie Murr and Jillian Mattera are roommates in another apartment in The Oaks. “They’re great – brand new, fresh and bright – and the bathrooms are massive,” Murr said.

“I’m very excited,” Mattera said. “I like to be on campus and stay involved, and these apartments, with a full kitchen and living room, make you feel like you’re grown up.”

Construction on The Oaks B, C and D buildings continues over the next few weeks. Students who will live in those buildings are being housed at several locations, including new apartments at Campus Trace and Partners Place as well as a residence hall at the former Elon Homes for Children and the local Best Western Motel. Students moving into the Campus Trace Aug. 27 said the temporary housing was large and comfortable.
