Elon Programs awarded grants for LGBT programs

Two programs at Elon are recent recipients of grants from the Guilford Green Foundation (GGF); a Greensboro, NC based non-profit dedicated to uniting community by fostering organizations which advance Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons and issues. Each year GGF provides grants in excess of $55,000 to organizations throughout the greater Guilford County area to support LGBT education and programs. This year’s Granting Ceremony will be held October 11 at the Greenhill Center for NC Art in Greensboro.

Elon’s Multicultural Center was awarded $3,000 to fund a campus-wide event featuring a speaker on LGBT issues to be held in the spring. The second GGF grant was awarded to Spectrum, a student organization at Elon which strives to increase visibility and better the lives of LGBT people, at Elon and beyond. Spectrum received $3,000 to support their campus-wide “gay? fine by me” initiative. “Gay? fine by me” is a nationwide effort of people across the United States, gay and straight, to support LGBT issues and to stand up against discrimination by visibly proclaiming that their community accepts LGBT people. The funds allocated by GGF to Spectrum will help to defray the cost of the day-long program.
