The program included remarks from Elon President Leo M. Lambert and an address by
Pamela Duncan, professor and co-director of the Institute on Aging at the
University of Florida.
Student
awards were presented by Stephen Bailey, research coordinator; Marianne
Janssen, director of clinical education; and Gerald Dillashaw, dean of The
School of Education.
Coble
has represented North Carolina’s 6th District since 1984. He played
a key role in securing start-up funds for the Center for Fitness and Human Movement
Studies, which provides expanded clinical training opportunities for students
enrolled in Elon’s physical therapy and exercise science programs.
Coble
serves on the House Judiciary Committee, chairs the Subcommittee on Crime,
Terrorism and Homeland Security and also serves on the House Committee on
Transportation and Infrastructure.
An
advocate for higher education, Coble recently helped Elon obtain a $1 million
federal grant for the purchase of a fleet of environmentally friendly
bio-diesel shuttle buses.
Duncan
has conducted extensive research on rehabilitation and recovery for stroke
patients. She serves as a senior research scientist with the Department of
Veterans Affairs, directing its Rehabilitation Outcomes Research Center. She is
principal investigator of Locomotor Experience Applied Post-Stroke (LEAPS), a
five-year, $13.9 million research program funded by the National Institute of
Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
Duncan
earned a doctorate in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill in 1991.
