Students share insight into Winter Term courses

Students discussed the unique insights they have gained through Winter
Term courses during Info-Share, held Friday, Jan. 19 in Yeager Recital
Hall. Students from several academic disciplines talked about the
in-depth, engaged learning that takes place during the three-week term.

A student giving a speech
Abby Remein, who is taking Global Fine Arts, said the class is very
hands-on. “Exploring art helps you appreciate other cultures better,”
said Remein, whose class hosted a group of 7th-graders earlier in the
day Friday to teach them about the art of various cultures.

Danny Jaber is a business major who has found Current Issues in Biology
to be a fascinating Winter Term course. Students have discussed issues
such as global warming, cloning and genetic engineering, and have also
done an independent project on a topic of interest. Jabber’s project
dealt with a little-known phenomenon called endocrine disruption, which
is causing fundamental changes in the cell structures of fish and birds.

“Winter Term has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge,”
Jabber said. “I’m a business major, but this course has had an impact
on me, because I’m now considering double-majoring in biology. This
Winter Term has been perfect for me. It’s given me the opportunity to
do things I never thought I would.”

Andrea Medinaceli isn’t afraid to stand up in front of an audience
anymore after a positive experience in Public Speaking with Mark Fox,
adjunct instructor of communications. “Before taking this course, I
would have been a mess up here in front of you,” Medinaceli told the
audience. “I had a real fear of it. My major is international business,
so I need to be able to speak in front of people, and this class has
helped me overcome my fear.”
