Elon University was featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education cover story in the publication’s Jan. 26, 2007 edition. The article is titled “The New Gender Divide: Data show that more women than men now enroll in college, but is there really a ‘boy crisis’?”
The story leads with an anecdote from a statistics class taught by James Beuerle, assistant professor of mathematics, in which Clayton Winkelvoss is the only male student. Reporter Robin Wilson describes how Elon is emblematic of a national trend on college campuses, where the majority of undergraduate students are female. At Elon, and many other schools, an even larger majority of students in honors programs are female.
The Chronicle noted Elon’s progress in reducing the gender gap, and quoted Greg Zaiser, dean of admissions. Zaiser pointed out that while men made up only 37 percent of the applicants for the fall 2006 enrolling class, 42 percent of those who ended up enrolling were male. Zaiser said Elon does not give male applicants extra consideration in the admissions process.
Also quoted in the story were sophomore John McMillian, senior William Allen, and freshmen Jonathan Mahlandt and Molly McGowan.
