Hickey named dean and university librarian

Kate Hickey, director of Belk Library, has been named Dean and University Librarian, effective June 1. She came to Elon in 1996 and helped design and open Belk Library, which opened in 2000.

She and her staff have built library holdings and services significantly since moving into the new building. In 2004, the library expanded to a 24-hour format to provide quiet study and technology needs requested by SGA.

Hickey supervises a staff of 12 professional librarians with faculty rank and a library support staff of 15. She has been active in the American Library Association and has guided library staff through two catalog systems changes, opened an expanded archive collection and storage facility at Elon West and assisted the School of Law in creation of the law library.

Hickey received a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and a master’s degree in library science from Clarion University. Previously, she was director and associate professor of the John Shulman Library at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport.
