Elon University parents Tom and Debbie McInerney of Weatogue, Conn., have made a $100,000 gift to the university to endow the Meghan A. McInerney Scholarship in honor of their daughter. Meggie McInerney is an Elon junior majoring in art with a concentration in digital art.
The McInerney Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in any academic field of study who exhibits superb leadership, character and intellect. Preference will be given to students who have high financial need and who demonstrate a commitment to the development of the whole person.
Tom McInerney is chairman and chief executive officer of ING Americas. The McInerneys received significant scholarships and financial support that enabled them to attend college, and are committed to providing access to a college education for all students, regardless of their financial means. They established the McInerney Scholarship as a surprise 21st birthday gift to their daughter.
