Alumnus and parents make scholarship gifts

The following donors have made generous scholarship gifts to
the university to make an Elon education available to
deserving students:

Dr. Robert M. and Lydia C. Califf of Durham, N.C., have
established The Califf Endowed Scholarship. The Califfs have
been dedicated members of Elon’s Board of Visitors since
2002 and their daughter, Sharon Califf Boozer, is a 2000 Elon
graduate.

The Califf Scholarship will be awarded to an entering
freshman who is a deserving student and who is not a
candidate for an academic merit award. The scholarship will
be given to a resident of North Carolina or South Carolina
who is not eligible for a performance-based scholarship, such
as athletics or performing arts, and who has overcome
challenges such as illness, poverty or family crisis. In
addition, the recipient will have an SAT score and GPA below
the 25th percentile of his or her classmates. Financial need
is not a requirement, but may be taken into consideration.

Elon parents Jack and Kathy McMackin of Chevy Chase, Md.,
have established The McMackin Family Scholarship for
International Study to support the university in its goal of
becoming a distinctive national model of academic excellence
and to provide scholarship aid to worthy Elon students.

The McMackins have been dedicated members of the Parents
Council since 2005. Their oldest son, Jack, is a junior at
Elon who has benefited from two study abroad experiences. The
McMackin Family Scholarship for International Study will be
awarded to students pursuing study abroad opportunities.
Financial need is a requirement.

A new scholarship endowed by Willard “Bill” Mills
of Cary, N.C., and his mother, Helen Mills Gardner, will
benefit a North Carolina student, preferably a business
major.

The Mills Family Endowed Scholarship will be awarded based
on financial need or merit. Bill Mills graduated from Elon in
1969 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
He and his mother chose to endow the scholarship to help make
an Elon education available to a student from their home
state.

Elon parents Steven and Janice Glazer of Potomac, Md., have
pledged $25,000 for The Endowment for Support of Hillel, the
Jewish student organization at Elon.

The role of Hillel in campus life is becoming more important
as the number of Jewish students at Elon increases.
Hillel’s mission is to foster and promote relations among
students, faculty and staff, and to encourage social and
religious interaction that is consistent with Jewish values
and spirituality. To ensure that the Jewish student body is
ministered to effectively, the Glazers have chosen to endow
this fund. Their daughter, Kim, is an Elon junior majoring in
psychology.

Earnings from the fund will directly support the annual
programming of Elon Hillel.
