Elon hits new record in football rankings

Elon University continued its historic football season when it climbed to #14 in the most recent poll by The Sports Network, which announced Oct. 29 its weekly national rankings in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

Freshman quarterback Scott Riddle established new Elon single-season milestones on Oct. 27 for the most completions (254), most touchdown passes (23), most passing yards (2,606) and most touchdowns responsible for (28).
The placement is the highest ever in Division I for the Phoenix team and comes two days after the squad, led by freshman quarterback sensation Scott Riddle, defeated Chattanooga 38-28 while shattering four single-season school records. Elon had been ranked #16 going into the game.

The Phoenix (6-2 overall, 4-1 Southern Conference) retained a first-place tie for the league lead with Wofford (7-2, 4-1) and clinched its first winning record in seven seasons. Elon has fashioned its first four-game winning streak since claiming four consecutive contests during its 7-4 campaign in 2000. The Phoenix last started out at 6-2 in 1999 en route to a 9-2 finish.

Riddle established new Elon single-season milestones for the most completions (254), most touchdown passes (23), most passing yards (2,606) and most touchdowns responsible for (28). In the process, he extended his own Southern Conference record by registering his seventh consecutive contest in which he passed for 300 or more yards.

Now 4-1 in home games, the Phoenix clinched the program’s first winning season at Rhodes Stadium in five years. Elon forged a winning 3-2 mark at home in 2002, but finished that campaign 4-7 overall.

The Phoenix travels to Furman on Nov. 3 for a 2 p.m. game.
