MBA student offers tips to parents of Elon Academy participants

MBA student Victor Moran, a certified public accountant, offered tips for tax season on Feb. 2 to parents of teenagers enrolled in the Elon Academy.
The Elon Academy’s partnership with Elon University’s MBA program continued Feb. 2 during Elon Academy’s February Saturday Program. Victor Moran, a certified public accountant and a current graduate student in the MBA program, presented a workshop to 18 parents and guardians on preparing for tax season, discussing common fears of taxes, good filing practices and other helpful tips.

The Elon Academy and Elon University’s MBA program partnership began in the fall when MBA students and alumni raised $700 for the Elon Academy Dream Fund, a special budget allocated to assist Elon Academy students with making their dreams a reality. This discretionary fund will be used to sponsor college visits, involve students in school and community projects and help students and families when unexpected life situations arise.

The Elon Academy enrolled its inaugural class in summer 2007. Each year, approximately two dozen rising sophomores from the Alamance-Burlington School System will join the program, which combines four-week summer residential experiences with monthly sessions during the academic year. The 26 students in the inaugural class, who represent all six public high schools in the county, will continue in the program through the next three years. The Elon Academy will have an eventual annual enrollment of about 70 students.

The mission of the Elon Academy is to inspire academically oriented students who are often underrepresented on college and university campuses to pursue higher education, build leadership skills and develop an active sense of social responsibility.

Eligible students must have a desire to succeed, be willing to commit to the three-year program, demonstrate academic promise, have no history of disciplinary problems, and demonstrate financial need or have no family history of college attendance.

The Elon MBA was recently ranked by BusinessWeek as #2 in the South, #12 in the nation, and was the top-ranked part-time MBA program in North Carolina.   The program focuses on providing a full-time experience in a part-time format, offers an international travel component, and gives students the opportunity to work on consulting projects
