Acclaimed costume and set designer visits Elon

An Oscar-winning costume and set designer shared stories of his life and career Feb. 21 during a presentation to performing arts students who crowded McKinnon Hall to hear reflections of his time working on Broadway and in Hollywood.

Tony Walton interacts with performing arts students before speaking Feb. 22 about his career as a set and costume designer on Broadway and in Hollywood.
Tony Walton, who was honored with an Oscar in 1980 for All That Jazz and an Emmy for the television movie “Death of a Salesman” in 1986, commented on costumes and set designs for many of his musical theatre productions, images projected onto a display screen at the front of the room.

The photos from the sets that he discussed were those he took himself.

“Up until the early ‘60s, most theater productions were pretty effectively (documented) in photography,” he said. But a pattern developed where photographers stopped taking photos of the entire set, opting instead to capture closely cropped pictures of the performers.

Walton’s visit to Elon included talks to two classes – one on set design, the other for directing – as well as lunch with faculty and students. He will attend a student-directed one-act performance in the Black Box Theatre on Feb. 22.
