Elon University is gaining momentum in a nationwide recycling contest involving hundreds of colleges and universities. Elon is currently ranked No. 85 out of 171 entries for overall weight volume in RecycleMania 2008, which is now entering its fourth week of competition.

A slight majority of North Carolina residents approve of how Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole is handling her job and are satisfied with her representation of North Carolina, according to the latest Elon University Poll, but state residents give low performance marks to President George W. Bush and to Congress as a whole.

The head of a nonprofit corporation that focuses on school reform visits Elon University this week for a presentation on engaged learning.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault, a longtime reporter whose career included stints with the New York Times, CNN and NPR, spoke with the Elon University community Feb. 26 about trends in American journalism and what she believes are stereotypes found in media coverage of events in Africa, where she now lives.

An award-winning journalist for NPR and CNN will talk about Africa, from where she now reports, during a presentation Feb. 26 that is free and open to the public. Charlayne Hunter-Gault will also take part in a question-and-answer session in Whitley Auditorium earlier in the day.

Fraternity and sorority members at Elon received national honors and recognition during the recent Mid-American Greek Council Association (MGCA) conference in Chicago.
