New Student Orientation attends regional Conference

Elon’s New Student Orientation took 15 members of its Leadership Team to the 33rd Annual Southeastern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW) at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia March 7 – 9.  Approximately 80 universities throughout the Southeast were in attendance.

Students attended various presentation sessions while sharing concepts and ideas from our own Orientation program.  Additionally, students gathered information from various schools about successful practices in their programs.

Twelve students presented workshops to conference attendees.  The four workshops presented were on topics such as: motivation, leadership, encompassing academics into orientation, and ways to create a continual orientation process for first-year students.  Each session was attended by over 70 undergraduate, graduate, or professional members at the conference.

Members Chika Kusakawa and Jon Mahlandt participated in a Case Study competition and won First Place for Best Communication. The team also participated in a skit competition in which they educated peers on Elon’s Orientation Program.  Team Members stated they valued the opportunity to learn from other schools, strengthening their knowledge about orientation practices, and building community among orientation programs in the Southeast.

Students in attendance included: Becca Bender, Lisa Bodine, Conor Britain, Katlin Carlin, Hallie Kilmer, Carolyn Klasnick, Chika Kusakawa, Erin Lobdell, Jon Mahlandt, Elizabeth Molloy, Christina Peterson, Megan Schneider, Rob Slobodien, Rachel Teem, and Clay Winkelvoss.
