Elon students host “Earth Week” April 20-25

Two student organizations have teamed up for a series of events this month to celebrate the environment. The Green Team and Sierra Club are raising awareness of environmental sustainability, which includes Earth Day on April 22, during the campus community’s first ever “Earth Week.”

Sunday, April 20:
Susan Tordella-Williams: “Don’t Blow it, Good Planets are Hard to Find” speech (and Eco-BBQ)
5:30-7:30 p.m.
West Lawn at the Moseley Center

Please bring your own plates, cups, bowls and utensils to help reduce the amount o waste created. Also, bring picnic blankets to sit on for the BBQ and speaker! This event is sponsored by North Area Council, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Kappa Sigma.

Monday, April 21:
Sustainable Fashion Show
2-4 p.m.
West Lawn at the Moseley Center

Sponsored by the Sustainable Learning Community, the fashion show features recycled clothing to teach how old clothing can be made to look new!

Tuesday, April 22:
Elon nature walk and City Park cleanup
1 p.m. (walk) and 1:45 p.m. (cleanup)

Guided walks around campus on nature trails will leave from Boney Fountain (at the east entrance to the Moseley Center). A group will also leave from the same location a short time later to help clean up Burlington’s City Park. The cleanup counts towards service or restitution hours.

To sign up for the City Park cleanup, contact Meredith Naughton at mnaugton@elon.edu.

Wednesday, April 23:
Farmers Market
11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Colonnades Lawn

Stop by for lunch and to meet local farmers whose produce will be available to sample. There will be everything from all-natural and fresh ice cream to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Thursday, April 24:
“Landfill on the Lawn”
11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
West Lawn at the Moseley Center

Students will be filling the area with the trash Elon makes and separating out recyclables. The event is meant to show not only how much waste the university creates – but how much is not being recycled.

Friday, April 25:
Earthfest Concert
8 p.m. – Midnight
Next to Koury Gymnasium

Performers such as The War, Kenny Huffman, World Percussion Ensemble, and Spotlight Effect will be present. The event is sponsored by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and by Substance Education.

Organizers will be selling T-shirts in the Moseley Center and at events. The apparel can be tie-dyed at select events. They are $9 if ordered by Wednesday, April 16, or $11 if purchased at the Moseley table or an event. The shirts have been made with sustainable material and dyes. On Friday, April 18, students can use Phoenix Cash to pay for them in Moseley from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Please check e-net and fliers around campus for updates, location changes and rain locations. Any questions or comments can be sent to Meredith Naughton at mnaughton@elon.edu.
