Local candidates discuss education at Elon political forum

Elon University hosted a political forum on May 4 for the dozen men and women running for the Alamance County Board of Commissioners.

Moderated by professor Peter Felten, who directs the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, 10 candidates attended the event. The event was co-sponsored by the university and the Alamance Citizens for Education.

One of the most pointed questions asked of each candidate: “Would you be willing to raise taxes if the money were earmarked for education?”

Participants included Democratic candidates Tristan V. Patterson, Linda Massey, Joyce Bowman and Eddie Boswell.

Republican candidates included Dan Ingle, Lee Isley, Patricia Pickell, Hayes Teague, Tom Manning and Larry Lee.

Two candidates – Republicans Rebecca Stumpfig and Bill Lashley – were not present.
