North Carolina State Auditor speaks at Elon

NC State Auditor Leslie W. “Les” Merritt, Jr.
What do Curtis Holshouser, District Director (Audit) for the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, Jim Culbreth and Dillan Rodrigue with Grant Thornton LLP’s Business Advisory Services, Dr. Glenn Helms, professor of Accounting at the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, and R Milton Howell, III, partner, Davenport, Marvin, Joyce and Company, LLP have in common?

They all shared the stage in McKinnon Hall on Monday, May 19, with N.C. State Auditor Les Merritt and Deputy Chief State Auditor Kris Bailey for the Elon University Department of Accounting and Finance 3rd Annual Spring Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Seminar. Merritt is the first Certified Public Accountant licensed in North Carolina to hold the post of State Auditor.

Accounting professionals from across central North Carolina gathered to hear presentations on public and private sector auditing and professional ethics in the accounting profession. CPAs licensed in North Carolina are required to keep current in their profession through continuing education and Elon has hosted CPE seminars for several years to help them fulfill this requirement. Seminar presenters volunteer their time to speak and proceeds support departmental initiatives and student activities through Elon’s Lambda Xi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor society for accounting students.
Elon’s next CPE seminar will be on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 when the Department of Accounting and Finance hosts its 10th Annual Fall Continuing Professional Education Seminar.
