Four Elon Athletics Teams Earn NCAA Academic Awards

Elon's men’s basketball, women's cross country, women's golf and volleyball teams are among NCAA Division I teams receiving public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The public recognition awards, announced by the NCAA April 24, are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort.

The four Elon teams rank in the top 10 percent of all teams in the nation in their sports. With four teams being honored, Elon ranks third among Southern Conference schools receiving public recognition accolades, trailing only Davidson and Furman.

“We continue to be proud of the fact that our student-athletes and our coaches are very committed to the academic mission of Elon University,” Elon Director of Athletics Dave Blank said. “Having these four sports receive special recognition for academic excellence along with having all of our sports achieve higher marks than the NCAA requirements speaks volumes to the fact that our athletics department is totally committed to the academic experiences of our student-athletes.”

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 975 to a perfect 1,000.

For the second consecutive year, the Phoenix women’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball squads earned perfect scores. The Elon men’s basketball team – the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament Runner-up – narrowly missed achieving a perfect score, tallying a 975.
