Police training strengthens crisis plans

Dozens of police officers and emergency medical crews gathered July 17 at Elon University for a daylong training exercise meant to sharpen law enforcement responses in the event of a campus crisis.

Local emergency responders practiced in the Smith residence hall on July 17 for campus crises.
Personnel from several local and state agencies were on hand for the training, including Elon University campus police, Elon town police, Gibsonville police, Burlington police, sheriff’s deputies from Alamance and Rockingham counties, Alamance County Emergency Medical Services, the Elon Fire Department and the State Bureau of Investigation.

The exercises around the Smith and Carolina residence halls afforded officers an opportunity to hone their skills in situations where a shooter comes onto campus. Ambulance crews also trained for situations where victims must be evacuated from an active crime scene.

Approximately 80 people took part in the training, which required the closure of the parking lot near the Mooney building.
