Sorensen presents research at conference in Sweden

Kerstin Sorensen

Kerstin Sorensen, an assistant professor of political science, presented a paper at the International Sociological Association Research Committee 19’s conference on The Future of Social Citizenship: Politics, Institutions, and Outcomes, taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, on Sept. 4-6.

“The Inter-American Development Bank and Poverty Reduction” examines the debates and discourse within the Inter-American Development Bank on poverty and the ideas guiding the Bank’s strategies, actions and policy advice since its renewed commitment in the mid-1990s to reducing poverty and promoting social equity in Latin America.

The study finds that although there is a greater emphasis today on issues of equity and its relation to the low impact that economic growth has had on poverty reduction in the region, there has not been a major change or shift away from the market-based approach which has guided the bank’s actions and advice as they relate to poverty reduction in the past 10 years.
