Parents, alumni and friends endow scholarships, enhance facilities

The following members of Elon’s community of donors have made gifts to the Ever Elon Campaign to support scholarships, athletics facilities and active learning opportunities.

Anthony and Olga Duke

Anthony D. Duke Jr. and his wife, Olga Cabrer Duke, of East Norwich, N.Y., made a $70,000 gift to create the Anthony and Olga Duke Communications Scholarship, which will assist students in the School of Communications. The couple’s daughter, senior Milena Rutgers Duke, is a communications major at Elon.

Anthony Duke is the great-grandson of Benjamin Newton Duke, who along with his brother, James Buchanan “Buck” Duke, funded construction of the Artelia Roney Duke Science Building as part of the effort to rebuild the campus following the 1923 fire. Anthony Duke’s nephew, Nicholas Rutgers Duke Jr., is a member of the Class of 2008.

Russell and Rosella Wilson

Russell R. Wilson and his wife, Rosella, of Burlington, N.C., made a gift to establish the Russell and Rosella Wilson Endowment In Support of the Elon Academy. Funds from the endowment will help underwrite programs in the Elon Academy, an academic enrichment program sponsored by the university to encourage Alamance County high school students with high financial need to earn a college degree, build leadership skills and serve their communities.

The Wilsons are longtime supporters of the Elon Fund and the Phoenix Club and are members of Elon’s Board of Visitors. Russell has chaired the board’s development and membership committees. He is the parent of Taylor Wilson, a member of the Class of 1986.

Wade Williamson Jr. ’70

A $50,000 gift from Wade Williamson Jr. ’70, of Elon, will support expansion of Koury Field House on the university’s north campus. A former Elon football player, Williamson has been a longtime donor to the university, making gifts to support construction of Rhodes Stadium and the Ernest A. Koury, Sr. Business Center. He also is a member of the Board of Visitors, Elon Society executive board and Order of the Oak planned giving society, and has served on Elon’s National Alumni Executive Board.

Harry and Carol Rose

Supporting active learning opportunities in Elon’s Martha and Spencer Love School of Business was the inspiration behind a $50,000 gift from Harry and Carol Rose, of New Hope, Pa. The couple’s gift will establish The Rose Family Endowed Fund for Engaged Learning in Business.

Rose Family Grants will assist Love School students pursuing business-related internships. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need whose participation in an internship is integral to their studies. The grants may be used to help defray internship costs, including housing, travel and living expenses. The couple also made a $12,500 annual fund gift to ensure that the grants can be awarded immediately while the endowment is being built.

Alva and John McGovern

Recognizing the value of additional need-based scholarships, Alva Sanders McGovern ’72 and her husband, John F. McGovern, of Atlanta, have made a $50,000 gift to establish the Jack and Alva McGovern Endowment.

Jack and Alva McGovern Scholarships will assist deserving students with demonstrated financial need. The couple also are making annual gifts to ensure that the scholarship will be awarded immediately while the endowment is being built. Alva is chair of Elon’s Board of Visitors.

Harvey and Karen White

Enabling additional students to experience Elon’s transformational study abroad program prompted parents J. Harvey and Karen White, of Knoxville, Tenn., to contribute $50,000 to establish the J. Harvey and Karen H. White Endowed Scholarship for International Study. The couple’s son, Joseph “Joey” Harvey White Jr., is a 2004 Elon alumnus.

The Whites served on the Parents Council from 2001 to 2004, chairing the development committee. Currently, they are members of the Board of Visitors.
