More than 3,000 books were collected this fall in a textbook drive organized by history professor Brian Digre. Digre delivered the books, packed into 120 boxes bound for the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, on Dec. 19 to a U.S. Naval base for transport to the African nation.
The books will be received by Francis Amedahe, dean of education at Cape Coast and the visiting Ghanaian Fulbright Scholar at Elon in 2006-07. The U.S. Navy is delivering the books via transport vessel at no charge.
Faculty, staff and students contributed to the book drive with additional students helping to pack boxes. C.C. Cowan, the manager of moving and set-up at Elon, and his moving crews transported books around campus and helped load trucks.
Digre said that driving advice by Keith Dimont, supervisor of automotive services, was invaluable in delivering the books to the naval base. Augustus Vogel arranged the sea transport and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana.
