Former North Carolina Supreme Court Justice and Elon University School of Law distinguished jurist in residence, James G. Exum Jr., has been honored with the 2009 John McNeil Smith Jr. Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities Section Award by the North Carolina Bar Association.
The award was presented by Amanda Martin, chair of the Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, at the section’s annual meeting on February 25.
The nomination for the award to Exum, who also serves as a member of the Elon University School of Law Advisory Board, states, “Justice Exum has had a remarkable career serving as both a judge and attorney. His career has been highlighted by a steadfast role as an advocate for the rights of individuals coupled with the scrupulous and meticulous interpretation of the laws governing the state and country. During his career, he has demonstrated a deep-seated desire to promote both the awareness of the law and a greater understanding of the impact of the law on individuals.”
As distinguished jurist in residence at Elon Law, Exum serves as a resource for students and faculty, helps to structure the school’s appellate practice instruction, and teaches courses such as legal skills, professional responsibility, and legal ethics.
