Elon adopts Principles of Responsible Management Education

In another sign of its commitment to teaching ethical values, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has formally adopted the Principles of Responsible Management Education, which connects the university with an international group of business schools that encourage social responsibility in the creation of a sustainable global economy.

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business at Elon University.

The university is one of just 219 schools around the world taking part in the group and joins the ranks of such institutions as Cornell, Babson and Bentley in the adoption of the PRME’s six principles. From its web site:

Principle 1Purpose: We will develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.

Principle 2Values: We will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact.

Principle 3Method: We will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership.

Principle 4Research: We will engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value.

Principle 5 Partnership: We will interact with managers of business corporations to extend our knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges.

Principle 6Dialogue: We will facilitate and support dialog and debate among educators, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organizations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability.

Susan Manring, an associate professor of management, will serve as the chairwoman of the program at Elon. Activities related to the partnership will be included in the business school’s long-range strategic plan, and a report on Elon’s efforts will be submitted each year to the organization.
