The Chronicle of Higher Education cited Anne Bolin, a professor of anthropology, in a recent article on female college professors who compete in bodybuilding competitions and the stereotypes they continue to challenge.
The article, “Bodybuilding Professors Outmuscle the Stereotype,” was published online on Oct. 11, 2009.

“For women to lift weights continues to be a subversive act,” says Anne E. Bolin, who in addition to being an amateur bodybuilder is a professor of anthropology and sociology at Elon University. She teaches, among other things, about male humor at the gym. “We’re moving ahead in social, economic, and political arenas, and our bodies are the last frontier for us, the last place for us to gain equity and do with what we want.”
Bolin is a professional bodybuilder in the National Physique Association and has competed as recently as July. The Chronicle interviewed her in 1992 for “Anthropology at Winner’s Gym: Faculty Portrait of Anne Bolin” on her interest in bodybuilding.
