Six Elon Law students initiated into William Hooper Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta

Elon Law's William Hooper chapter of the professional law fraternity Phi Alpha Delta initiated a third class of 6 members on February 23, bringing total membership in the chapter to 67. The chapter was founded in March of 2009.

Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International is the largest co-ed professional law fraternity in the United States. It was founded in 1902 and today has over 270,000 initiated members. The fraternity’s membership includes university students, law school students, lawyers, judges, senators, and former United States presidents. Approximately one out of six attorneys in the United States are members of Phi Alpha Delta.

Recently, Phi Alpha Delta co-sponsored Elon Law’s second annual Martin Luther King, Jr. program. The program, which took place on January 14, featured a forum that explored legal aspects of the American civil rights movement, evaluated the impacts of the Greensboro sit-ins and other forms of non-violent protest on civil rights law past and present. With a commitment to liberty and equal justice, Phi Alpha Delta was the first law fraternity to open membership to all genders, races, creeds and national origins.

New members of Elon Law’s William Hooper chapter took an oath during the February 23 initiation ceremony to support the purpose of the fraternity, “to advance the ideals of liberty and equal justice under law; to stimulate excellence in scholarship; to inspire the virtues of compassion and courage; to foster integrity and professional competence; to promote the welfare of its members; and to encourage their moral, intellectual, and cultural advancement; so that each member may enjoy a lifetime of honorable professional and public service.”

This past September, Phi Alpha Delta initiated a second class of 37 members. Elon Law students join a prestigious list of past and current prominent members of Phi Alpha Delta, including: President William H. Taft, President Jimmy Carter, President Bill Clinton, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Vice President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
