Phoenix baseball team selected for NCAA Division I Championship Field

Elon's baseball team is among three Southern Conference teams named to the field of 64 for the 2010 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The Phoenix (38-22) will play its first round game against Alabama (37-22) in the Atlanta regional at 3 p.m., Friday, June 4. The other teams in the double elimination Atlanta regional are Mercer University (37-22) and Georgia Tech (45-13).

Sporting a 38-22 overall record and a RPI in the low 40s, the Elon Phoenix baseball team has earned an at-large bid as the number three seed in the Atlanta Regional of the 2010 NCAA Baseball Tournament. Georgia Tech will serve as the host school. It is the third consecutive season that Elon has advanced to regional play and the fifth time in the program’s 11-year NCAA Division I tenure. The Phoenix is in the Atlanta Regional for the second year in a row.

In 2010, Elon played 15 games against teams in this year’s field.

The Phoenix will take on second-seeded Alabama (37-22) on Friday at 3 p.m. Georgia Tech (45-13), the number eight national seed, is the regional’s top seed and will take on fourth-seeded Mercer (37-22) on day one.

“We’re just excited to be going and get this opportunity,” said head coach Mike Kennedy. “Our progam has been highly successful the last few years and this just shows that we’ve been able to maintain some success. We’re very excited and hope we continue to build. To lose a lot of talented players like we did after last year and bounce back and win 38 games and make it to a regional says a lot about our program.”

This marks the first time that the Southern Conference has placed three teams into regional play as The Citadel was placed as the number three seed in the Columbia Regional and College of Charleston earned a number two seed in the Myrtle Beach Regional.

Elon has never faced off with Alabama or Mercer. The Phoenix is 0-4 against Georgia Tech all-time, including a loss in last year’s regional.
