On February 10, law school dean George Johnson welcomed The Honorable Catherine C. Eagles, U.S. District Court Judge for the Middle District of North Carolina, as a special guest at the law school's first monthly Reception with the Legal Community of the spring semester.
On December 16, 2010, the United States Senate approved President Obama’s nomination of Judge Eagles to serve as United States District Judge for the Middle District of North Carolina.
From 1993 to 2005, Judge Eagles served as Resident Superior Court Judge, and from 2006 to 2010, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, in the North Carolina General Court of Justice. Judge Eagles was appointed to the bench by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. in 1993, elected in 1994 and re-elected in 1996 and 2004. She served in private practice from 1984 to 1993, and as law clerk from 1982 to 1984 for the Honorable J. Smith Henley in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College), Judge Eagles earned her law degree at The National Law Center at George Washington University, serving on the Law Review and as a member of Order of the Coif. She was as a member of the North Carolina Conference of Superior Court Judges, from1993 to 2010, where she served as chair of the Education Committee from 2005- 2010. She has been a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and Greensboro Bar Association since1984.
A member of the Guilford Inn of Court, and former member of the Joseph Branch Inn of Court, Judge Eagles has served on the advisory board for the North Carolina Judicial College, and on the Board of Directors as Vice Chair for the University of North Carolina School of Government Foundation.
A current member of North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys, Judge Eagles has also served on the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism; the Dispute Resolution Committee of the North Carolina Judicial Council; and Member and Vice-Chair of the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.
A co-author of North Carolina Evidentiary Foundations, Judge Eagles also has served as Associate Editor of the Tort and Insurance Journal, published by the American Bar Association Tort and Insurance Practice Section from 1992 to 1994.
The recipient of the Gwyneth P. Davis Public Service Award presented by the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys and the Trial Judge of the Year Award presented by North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, Judge Eagles has been a regular speaker at continuing legal education seminars and continuing judicial education programs.
