Clyde Ellis, a professor of history, gave a public lecture on April 11 as part of the University of South Carolina at Lancaster's annual Native American Studies Week.
Ellis spoke about the history and development of the contemporary powwow by demonstrating how the innovations in dance culture that first emerged on the Southern Plains in the first half of the 20th century have become the inspiration for regionally distinctive varieties of powwow culture.
