Professor Anne Bolin co-chaired an presented two invited sessions at the Society for Applied Anthropology meeting in San Francisco from March 29-April 2, 2011, in which an Elon alumna also presented on her work with Bolin while an undergraduate student.
Bolin co-chaired with Patricia Whelehan the first session, “Issues in Teaching Human Sexuality: Integrating Undergraduate Research into a Professional Project,” in which they discussed themes and pedagogical outcomes that emerged as the professors involved undergraduate students in the four-volume international Encyclopedia of Human Sexuality.
In the second session, “Dispatches from the Field of Internships,” Bolin and Whelehan discussed how scholarly internships in which undergraduates work directly with faculty on a professional project can be valuable learning experiences for students and faculty alike. The presentation addressed issues along with “aha moments” of mentoring undergraduate interns at two universities, including finding various forms of outside support for interns, in addition to course credit, course planning, and evaluation.
Elon alumna Leigh Lampley ’10, a psychology major and anthropology minor while at Elon and now a graduate student at the College of William & Mary program also presented. Her presentation, “An Undergraduate Adventure into Sexuality,” focused on her work with the four-volume encyclopedia of human sexuality.
