Love School of Business student team advances in IMA Student Case Competition

Four Elon University students from the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business have reached the “final four” of the IMA Student Case Competition and will travel to Orlando in June for the finals.

The Student Case Competition is sponsored annually by IMA(r), the Association for Accountants and Financial Professionals in Business, to provide an opportunity for students to interpret, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and communicate a solution to a management accounting problem.

Undergraduates Claire Tamer, Jamie Milliski and Sam Upton joined with MBA student Jeff Colgan to comprise the team, which was advised by Paula Weller, a lecturer in accounting.

For the 2011 competition, teams focused on the fictional “TransGlobal Airlines,” where students prepared an analysis of the profitability of each market segment, determined the breakeven passenger volume for the SOF to PLE route, prepare a SWOT analysis for the firm, recommend a strategy for the firm, and prepare a formal presentation for the executive committee.

The team submitted a DVD of its analysis for the initial judging rounds and will present their recommendations in person at the annual meeting of the organization.
