ELONTHON fundraiser tops $100,000 for children

For the second consecutive year, Elon University students who took part in the annual springtime ELONTHON dance marathon raised more than $100,000 to benefit young patients and their families with the nonprofit Children’s Miracle Network and Duke Children’s Hospital.

The ELONTHON 2011 executive committee on May 10 presented a check of more than $100,500 to a representative of the Children’s Miracle Network and Duke Children’s Hospital.

The ELONTHON 2011 Executive Committee presented a check for $100,547.55 at College Coffee on Tuesday to a representative of the two organizations. More than 1,000 students took part in the event, and several of the top individual and organizational fundraisers were recognized for their contributions.

“In this still-rough economy, it’s impressive to collect $100,000 in donations,” said Rose Porges, the Children’s Miracle Network volunteer coordinator for the Triad region of North Carolina. “This money means a lot to the patients at Duke Children’s Hospital.”

Held April 8-9, 2011, the ninth annual ELONTHON featured hours of dancing, music, games and activities to benefit the hospital. Throughout the event, participants also heard from patients and their families who have been treated at Duke.

“They appreciate Elon so much, and to know that, it makes you realize the money is going to help people, not just a cause,” said Alexandra Lawrence, a senior human services studies major from Ohio who served as executive director of the 2011 program. “This was one of the most successful ELONTHON events ever.”
