Asheville Citizen-Times: Asheville won’t release detailed police personnel records

From the Asheville Citizen-Times (4/23/11): City officials have declined to release detailed information about a former police evidence manager under an exemption in state personnel law designed to bolster public confidence in government.

Longtime civilian evidence manager Lee Smith resigned Feb. 18, about three weeks after the city put him on paid investigative suspension.

The circumstances leading to his resignation have sparked a state investigation into the discovery that police have lost track of at least 27 guns, drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Limited public records provided by the city include the date of his paid suspension and the date of his resignation but do not say what lead to the actions.
