New campus building names are a link to Elon’s history

Elon University's board of trustees has approved the naming of the residence halls in the Colonnades Neighborhood, as well as three buildings in Danieley Center. The new names honor former Elon presidents, trustees and alumni.

The current Colonnades A building will be named Story Hall in honor of alumni William Story Jr. ’36 and Hatcher Story ’38, along with Louise and Prentiss Story. The Story name is currently used to designate the three-building Story Center complex in North Residence Area that will be demolished this summer.

The current Colonnades B building will be named Emmett L. Moffitt Hall in honor of Elon’s third president. The Moffitt name is currently used for a residence building in North Residence Area that will be demolished in summer 2012. During this final use of that building, it will be named Old Moffitt Hall.

The new Colonnades E building, located furthest to the east in the complex, will be named William A. Harper Hall in honor of Elon’s fourth president.

The new Colonnades D building, located next to Harper Hall, will be named William W. Staley Hall in honor of Elon’s second president. The Staley name is currently used for a residence building in North Residence Area that will be demolished in summer 2012. During this final use of that building, it will be named Old Staley Hall.

The new Colonnades C building located next to the Koury Business Center will be named Kivette Hall in honor of lifelong Elon supporters Florence Olga Kivette Childress ’37 and her sister Marjorie Camille Kivette ‘41, along with their parents PL Kivette and Annie Tickle Kivette. The Kivette sisters left a major estate gift to their alma mater.

Danieley Center

With demolition of Story Center scheduled to begin in July, the names of the three buildings in that complex will be transferred to three existing residence buildings in Danieley Center.

Danieley Center N building will be named Wallace L. Chandler Hall in honor of Elon trustee emeritus Wallace L. Chandler ’49.

Danieley Center L building will be named Reid A. and Grace M. Maynard Hall in honor of the late Reid Maynard, a longtime member of the board of trustees, and his wife, Grace.

Danieley Center M building will be named George D. Colclough Hall in honor of the late George D. Colclough ‘26, a longtime member of the board of trustees.
