Stephen Smith ’69 recollects his first day at Elon for local newspaper

While first-year students all over the country are moving into the dorms of their colleges and universities, Stephen Smith '69 reflects on his own move-in day experience at Elon nearly 50 years ago for The PIlot of Southern Pines, N.C.

“My father steered our ’63 Ford station wagon off Haggard Avenue, through a red-brick gateway, and into the asphalt parking lot between Smith Dormitory and the Duke Building at Elon College. It was about 3 p.m. on the humid, overcast afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 11, 1965,” Smith writes.
