Colleagues dedicate bench honoring former Elon custodian

Millard Lee died in late 2009, and on Nov. 11, his colleagues and family gathered to remember his legacy.

Family, friends and colleagues of former Elon custodian Millard Lee gathered in front of the Center for the Arts on Friday afternoon to dedicate a bench in his memory nearly two years after his passing.

Lee worked in the afternoons at Elon University and was responsible for custodial service in the Center for the Arts offices and music rooms, as well as monitoring special events there in the evenings. He died Dec. 10, 2009.

Three dozen people heard remarks from Gregory Marshall, Lee’s supervisor in environmental services; George Troxler, professor emeritus of history and former dean of Cultural and Special Programs; and Marcus Lee, Millard’s son.

“He’s always felt that he’s been a part of this family, and we appreciate everything you all have done,” Lee said of his father’s longtime role with the university.

In addition to his own comments, Marshall read reflections from David Worden, director of environmental services. Worden was unable to attend the ceremony. Lee, who enjoyed traveling, was remembered for the life stories he’d share with colleagues prior to each shift, and for his professionalism and his “infectious” demeanor.

“Those who knew him knew that Millard didn’t believe in rushing,” Marshall recalled. “He believed in taking his time and enjoying what he was doing.”

The Nov. 11 afternoon service was led by University Chaplain Jan Fuller.
